Few-cycle strong-field light enables engineering of new dynamic states of matter such as THz light-induced superconductivity, metal-insulator transitions and controlled surface chemistry. Few-cycle pulses are also of importance for probing matter such as studying the quantum world on the attosecond scale using single-cycle pulses of X-rays. In this talk we discuss a novel concept of single-cycle free-electron lasing and give examples of applications of such extreme light in physics, chemistry and biology.
